Elizabeth City, NC
Yesterday we had a nice sail from the Little Alligator River over to Elizabeth City, NC. We left by 6:00 and arrived around 11:30 so we avoided the heat while underway. On the way we passed by a place called TCOM. They make surveillance balloons and the big balloons like Fuji that you see at sporting and other events. Their hangar is so big it holds 5 or 6 of their balloons. The "spy" balloons are used to patrol the US-Mexican border and in the Middle East. TCOM also makes and repairs the "Fat Alberts" we saw in the Keys. We also passed right by the CIA training facility - very, very hush-hush top secret so I can't say any more about it. Elizabeth City also has a huge Coast Guard air field and facility so we saw lots of planes and helicopters flying overhead.
This might be a "Fat Albert". |
The hangar. You can Google "TCOM" for more information. |
Last night we had dinner at a local fast food seafood place. If you could deep fry it they had it. We had trout, flounder, hush puppies, fries and coleslaw. It was pretty good after having cheese and crackers and kippered herring the last two nights - it's too hot to cook anything. The prices were very reasonable and the place was packed. Right after we got back to the boat it rained so we had to close the boat up for a while. The air outside cooled right down, but it was still high 80s down below. We finally went out in the rain and rigged a tarp over the forward hatch so we could get some of the cool air inside. It is forecast to be hot again today and tomorrow, and then finally cool down a bit early in the week.
Right now they are setting up for a farmer's market in the park right where our boat is docked. We'll check that out at 9:00. Then we're going to a museum this afternoon. Tomorrow is laundry day - again! Also the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal is on tomorrow. I'll try to listen to it on BBC Radio via the internet - wish me luck!
For the next couple of days you can check out our boat at the dock in Elizabeth City:

Now that's amazing! To see friends' boat on a webcam... So... how about a little dance?
Dody
LOL Dody! We told them to go out and wave. Don't think they ever did... Yesterday before it rained I could see Richard standing by the boom. I couldn't tell what he was doing; I thought maybe making sure stuff wouldn't blow away. Then later I saw Sue come out. Then they went back in. It sure gets dark early there - 8:22 according to the webcam, while it's light til about 9:10 here in Michigan! I guess the sun's up earlier there...
Oh, I did notice Friday afternoon the drawbridge in the background was up and then down.
Chris

Neat ballons but I'll alwayd run the Coinjock route. Too many homeless at the docks and not enough restaurants.
